Ever since Kevin Tit started Punkhouse Comedy in DC, I’ve wanted to get in on that. Tomorrow night, I’m getting in on that. I’m so excited. Naomi Karavani, Noah Crowley, Bridget Geiran, and Christian Escoto will be rounding out the lineup, and Kevin Tit will also be releasing his new album that night!! Maybe we’ll … Continue reading →

A Message from Mayor Tyler

Posted on December 24, 2018 by Tyler • Leave a comment

I gave a much shorter, infinitely less coherent version of this spiel as a toast at Shoney’s on December 17th, mostly out of respect for my fellow Mayors and Citizens. Also, I was in sugar shock from the high-fructose buffet.  If you’re reading this, you probably know a good deal about me. You’ve probably known … Continue reading →

Modern Life is Awesome Tour hits NYC Tonight!

Posted on December 21, 2018 by Tyler • Leave a comment

Yeahhhh, buddy so exciting to be back in NYC after all these years. Three, to be exact. That’s an eternity when you grew up going into the city several times a year, gawking at the tall buildings and learning how much more important everyone else’s time was than yours. Also, I don’t have an antique … Continue reading →

Modern Life is Awesome: Trenton, NJ Edition Tonight!

Trenton, New Jersey! All I know about you is that you have a pretty nifty war memorial building, some famous pizza place that grandfathered itself out of having bathrooms, and you stole the Red Sox’ AA franchise from New Britain when I was a kid. Do you know what it was like for us to … Continue reading →

Yeahhhh, buddy. Catch me tonight at the Morgantown Brewing Company with some funny locals tonight! 8pm show, details on the tour page and on the FB event here. The last time I was in Morgantown, I was just passing through on the way from DC to Columbus in 2011, so I didn’t get a real … Continue reading →

L-Ville! The first time I went (with Shane Rhyne and Aaron Chasteen last summer), it felt like indie rock summer camp. This time, it’ll be the summer but I’m assuming no less awesome. I’m at Kaiju tonight with Reed Sedgwick and more, 9pm, Sushi, and no cover! Sounds like a crazy good combination of things. … Continue reading →

Modern Life is Awesome tour lands in Chicago tonight and tomorrow!

Ah, Chicago. I can’t wait to spend these two days in you in the cold months and put my love of you to the test. So much is going on in town tonight and tomorrow (and, pretty much always), but I hope you can find the time to come and say hi. Here are the … Continue reading →

#NowPlaying The Who - "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" (@mca_music 1971 / 1981 Reissue) // Ehhhhhhh I dunno, man. The Who just never did it for me. I found this for a nice price at @wildhoneyrecords and it's got "I Can't Explain" on it so I picked it up, but listening through side one I'm remembering how this band's "moment" truly was cranking out Maximum R&B as 18-year-olds. I feel like they kinda lost the plot from there. I do have to give Entwhistle a lot of credit, since his bass work is most often the best part of any given Who song. Sure, Moon was a cool drummer, though I might not have given him a second thought had it not been for the episode of @disgracelandpod on him. It blows my mind he was 32 when he died, since it was relatively late in the band's career). My parents took me to see "Tommy" on Broadway in the 90s; it was pretty cool, but it didn't work in a decades-long attempt to sell me on musicals. I did have a brief stretch in high school where I really tried liking this band. I remember "The Seeker" showing up in 'American Beauty' and sounding pretty badass at the time, but dear God is it nearly unlistenable for me today. "Bobby" Dylan? Are you fucking serious, Roger? It's still a thousand times better than "Boris the Spider," anyway. I used to own this CD, and I've still never made it all the way through that song. This all probably sounds harsh, but I tend to hold Boomer shit to a higher standard/put its feet to a hotter flame... and at least they aren't The Doors. // Top Tracks 1. I Can't Explain 2. #SkipWeLoveYou // #NowPlaying Various Artists - ":30 Over D.C... Here Comes the New Wave!" (Limp Records, 1978) // After moving to DC thirteen years ago and completing a dissertation two years ago (both more or less because of the scene that this compilation helped build), I finally landed a copy of this at @redonionrecords last year. Josh told me this was a first press from Skip Groff's personal backlog that he had been in the process of unloading. It's a fascinating time capsule of a specific moment at the end of 1978, when there was so much weird bubbling under the surface in DC that something had to give. Both as record proprietor and engineer, Skip was a catalyst for what became DC hardcore (and by "a catalyst," I mean "the catalyst"). He even had a music zine (Groffiti) years before it was cool. He believed in his city and his scene when few people did, and changed the world. Let that be a lesson to the rest of you. RIP. https://wtop.com/music/2019/02/record-store-owner-early-dc-punk-producer-skip-groff-dies-at-70/ // #skipgroff #dcpunk #newwave #limprecords #kimkane #minorthreat #punkrock #yesterdayandtodayrecords #1978music #redvinyl #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #vinyl #rip #33rpm #compilation #slickeeboys #halfjapanese #joeroyallives #thenurses #billysynth #rockville #maryland #recordsleeve #recordshop
