For Boston, For Boston

Posted on January 18, 2015 by Tyler • Leave a comment

Greetings from the cold, windy, expensive, wet, crowded, and still somehow greatest city in the world, Boston. I’m actually sitting in a living room now in Natick. The last time I was in this town for more than an hour was 28 years ago. I don’t remember a whole lot about Natick from back then, … Continue reading →

Welcome to 2015 and (other peoples’) Stories from the Road

Posted on January 4, 2015 by Tyler • 1 Comment

It’s odd that the more I’m forced to write and be creative off of the internet, the more generic my post titles have gotten. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, I wanted to take this opportunity to throw up some fuzzy statistics from 2014 and to give profuse thanks to some good people down Alabammer way. … Continue reading →

#NowPlaying The Who - "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" (@mca_music 1971 / 1981 Reissue) // Ehhhhhhh I dunno, man. The Who just never did it for me. I found this for a nice price at @wildhoneyrecords and it's got "I Can't Explain" on it so I picked it up, but listening through side one I'm remembering how this band's "moment" truly was cranking out Maximum R&B as 18-year-olds. I feel like they kinda lost the plot from there. I do have to give Entwhistle a lot of credit, since his bass work is most often the best part of any given Who song. Sure, Moon was a cool drummer, though I might not have given him a second thought had it not been for the episode of @disgracelandpod on him. It blows my mind he was 32 when he died, since it was relatively late in the band's career). My parents took me to see "Tommy" on Broadway in the 90s; it was pretty cool, but it didn't work in a decades-long attempt to sell me on musicals. I did have a brief stretch in high school where I really tried liking this band. I remember "The Seeker" showing up in 'American Beauty' and sounding pretty badass at the time, but dear God is it nearly unlistenable for me today. "Bobby" Dylan? Are you fucking serious, Roger? It's still a thousand times better than "Boris the Spider," anyway. I used to own this CD, and I've still never made it all the way through that song. This all probably sounds harsh, but I tend to hold Boomer shit to a higher standard/put its feet to a hotter flame... and at least they aren't The Doors. // Top Tracks 1. I Can't Explain 2. #SkipWeLoveYou // #NowPlaying Various Artists - ":30 Over D.C... Here Comes the New Wave!" (Limp Records, 1978) // After moving to DC thirteen years ago and completing a dissertation two years ago (both more or less because of the scene that this compilation helped build), I finally landed a copy of this at @redonionrecords last year. Josh told me this was a first press from Skip Groff's personal backlog that he had been in the process of unloading. It's a fascinating time capsule of a specific moment at the end of 1978, when there was so much weird bubbling under the surface in DC that something had to give. Both as record proprietor and engineer, Skip was a catalyst for what became DC hardcore (and by "a catalyst," I mean "the catalyst"). He even had a music zine (Groffiti) years before it was cool. He believed in his city and his scene when few people did, and changed the world. Let that be a lesson to the rest of you.
