October Comedy in Knoxville (get ready)

Posted on September 27, 2016 by Tyler • Leave a comment

I jumped the gun a little bit on that U2 thing with my personal dates. Honestly, I’m just a tiny piece of this puzzle here in Knoxville. I mean, the POP CULTURE MIXTAPE show at the Pilot Light next Wednesday 10/5 is going to be great (flyer by BOSTON MCCOWN coming soon) and you should seriously plan … Continue reading →

The National Grammar Rodeo Tour hits Knoxville 2WICE! 9.22 & 10.5

Look, Knoxville, I’m only going to tell you this once. And probably a few more times leading up to the second show, and maybe once or twice more this afternoon because social media’s algorithms have disintegrated into pure garbage that buries actual events in your town that multiple parties have worked hard on and holds … Continue reading →

Friendlytown, New Zine, and Upcoming Shows

Posted on September 2, 2016 by Tyler • Leave a comment

Ideally, whenever I leave Knoxville, I’ll finally have a moment to reflect on everything I’ve gotten my hands into in this town. Because all too often I put my head down and get hit head-on with another show or another thing that deserves people’s attention but I dropped the ball on circulating. Tonight, we’re holding … Continue reading →

🏆Tyler's Top Album of the 2010s 🏆 MRS. MAGICIAN - 'STRANGE HEAVEN' (2011, Swami Records) __________ A few disparate thoughts about this one. First, this brings to mind a "Critic Who Cried 'The Beach Boys on Acid'" scenario. Critics used it to describe the Pixies and a whole bunch of other bands who could loosely be described as sort of that. Now, Mrs. Magician, a band who sounds EXACTLY LIKE THAT arrived, and put out what I think is the best album I've heard this decade, and the descriptor sounds kind of hack. Second, I don't normally buy into the idea that the "album of the decade" needs to capture the zeitgeist of anything, as most mainstream music pubs tend to say. I prefer a maxim that @beautypill once said about "Shake It Off" - it could have been a crusher even if it has been recorded and released 55 years ago. Well, 'Strange Heaven' doesn't really reflect the 2010s to me so much (outside of the DEEP SHREDDING NIHILISM) but it could have been a classic any of the previous five decades. Third, I had completely forgotten that @swami_john_reis (a true authority on making rock happen for 3 decades now) has his fingerprints all over this one. I missed the chance to tell him how much I love this fucking album the time @ssimoneau and I had a happenstance encounter with @hotsnakesband on tour in Cleveland that time last year. So, I'm telling him now here. Fourth... There's no fourth. Just get into it. I don't really know a ton about this band, and 2011 was so long ago that I forgot how I discovered it. Back to your regularly scheduled programming soon. Thanks for tuning in. __________ Top Tracks (even this whole thing yadda yadda...): 1. "Dead 80's" 2. "Heaven" 3. "True Blues" __________ #mrsmagician #strangeheaven #sandiego #swamirecords #surfrock #nihilistic #vinyl #summermusic #californiamusic #vinylcollection #sandiegomusic #vinyligclub #bestofthe2010s #2010smusic #33rpm #turntable #vinylrecords
Top Ten Albums of the Decade: #2 TURNOVER - 'PERIPHERAL VISION' (2015, @runforcover) ___________ I feel like Goldilocks when I'm sampling Turnover's catalog. That first 7" is delicious but too sweet after a couple of spoonfuls. Their two recent albums are a bit bland. But this, now THIS, is the best goddamned bowl of porridge that @willyipmusic has ever baked in that kitchen of his. Sure, Yip's hands are all over this thing, but it's still Turnover's career-defining record. 'Peripheral Vision,' to me, is like this decade's 'Summer in Abaddon' (Pinback, 04) in both its ballsy smoothness and how it makes you double-take at how a band managed to run through a half an hour of music without making a single wrong or false move. Astounding. I worry that this record has doomed this band. When I saw them a few months back at @pyramidschemegr, the crowd FUCKING ERUPTED whenever they went into a PV song (if my memory serves, they played *7* of the 11 songs here). Sometimes an album is just so damn undeniable, so damn *chef's kiss*, that the fans kind of have a point in not moving beyond it. ___________ Top Tracks: 1. "Humming" (that drumming!) 2. "Diazepam" (those lyrics!) 3. "I Would Hate You If I Could" (that sentiment!) ___________ #turnover #peripheralvision #runforcover #virginiabeach #chillwave #poppunk #vinylcollection #vinyligclub #vinyl #bestmusic #vinyllove #bestofthe2010s #33rpm #splitcolorvinyl #indierock #indievinyl #diazepan #dreampop #indiepop #beautifulmusic #willyip #vinylrecords #NowPlaying
Top 10 Albums of the Decade: #3 DADDY ISSUES - 'DEEP DREAM' (2017, @infinitycat) _________ There are two simple life lessons one can learn from this, the great, great, GREAT debut LP by my favorite TN band: 1) Don't piss off @missssteak; you will get torched (lyrically). 2) The 90s never died, but you will. Actually, hold up ✋. I'm not gonna throw yet another "90s" descriptor at this band. What do we all MEAN by it, anyway? Does it sound like it was recorded by an actual good band using major label money in an era of unmitigated optimism? As far as I can tell, when people say something sounds "90s" they usually just mean... good. But it's a self-defeating prophesy, like something Guy Debord would have written about. It doesn't matter if this album does distill the sonic characteristics of some bucolic past era; this is 100% the product of Nashville in the 2010's. It was always a treat when the trio would bring their big ol' bag of hooks to @pilotlightknox. I look forward to their sophomore LP in 2020. __________ Top Tracks: 1. "Locked Out" 2. "High St." 3. "In Your Head" __________ #daddyissues #Nashville #poppunk #punkmusic #trio #deepdream #jennamoynihan #jennamitchell #emilymaxwell #cokebottlevinyl #infinitycat #nashvillepunk #grungepop #bestofthe2010s #vinyl #decadeinmusic #turntable #33rpm #NowPlaying #tennessee #powerpop #vinylcollection #vinyligclub #top10 #translucentvinyl
